Petrol or SkyActiv diesel?

Motoring correspondents seem to prefer the new Skyactiv diesel to the petrol whereas a lot of my motoring includes short journeys. Is this new diesel technology any better at coping with short hops than the engines it replaces or is petrol still the best option. I drive about 8,000 miles pa.

It should be, because the exhaust manifold is incorporated into the head so that everything gets much hotter much faster.
