Engine management problem with Golf at 36,000 miles

I purchased a 2009 Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSi from an authorised dealership in 2012. The car had just 19,000 miles on the clock and was serviced regularly by them. Two weeks ago (at 36,000 miles) the engine management warning light came on and I took the car to the dealership to be checked out.

I’ve been told that it has “a low compression defect on engine cylinder no.1 causing engine misfire/poor running". The dealer has also said it’s unlikely I will qualify for any manufacturer's warranty. Is this right? I paid £13,500 for this vehicle last year and it doesn't seem fair that I now have to pay to fix it.

Unfortunately your are outside the period of liability on the part of the dealer who sold you the car. Law here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/

This engine has developed a reputation for this type of fault, especially is if is a 'twincharger' version (supercharged and turbocharged). If it has a full Volkswagen service history then I think you have a rightful claim from Volkswagen itself.
