Should Skoda contribute to a failed DPF in my Octavia vRS diesel?

I have an 07-plate Skoda Octavia vRS diesel. It has a full Skoda service history with 72,000 miles (the next service is due at 78,000). Recently, the particulate filter warning came on and I followed the remedial instructions as highlighted in the owners manual to clear this. Unfortunately the message didn't clear and the workshop message came up. I had an independent diagnostic done and they said the filter was ruined and I should go to Skoda. Should this have failed on a three-year-old car? If not, what sort of help should I expect from Skoda considering the part costs £1150?

No, this shouldn't have happened. But yes, it happens on Skoda diesels driven short distances from cold because of the way the DPF regenerates, or rather doesn't when treated in this way.
