Volkswagen ups power stakes with launch of 258PS Amarok
Volkswagen has upped the pick-up power stakes with the launch of its most-powerful Amarok yet. Developing 258PS, the 2018 Amarok will rival the Mercedes-Benz X-Class V6 and cost in the region of £38,000 before VAT when it reaches dealers in June.
The 2018 Volkswagen Amarok pick-up will be the new halo model in the range and surpass the 224PS V6 Amarok that was launched in 2016. The 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel is boosted to 258PS and 580Nm of torque, with the latter flowing from 1400rpm - 3000rpm.
The Amarok gets an overboost feature for overtaking, with the V6 engine producing 272PS for short bursts under heavy acceleration. Power is fed to the 4Motion all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Available in Highline or Aventura trim, Volkswagen's pick-up will be offered with some suitable visual upgrades, including a black roof liner, 20-inch wheels, leather seats and LED daytime running lights.
Prices are still to be confirmed, but the 258PS Amarok is expected to start in the region £38,000 for Highline models and rise to £42,000 for Aventura trim. As before, the range starts with the 163PS V6 at £25,430 excluding VAT.
