How do I charge the battery on a new Transit Custom?

The battery on the current Ford Transit Custom is under the drivers seat (awkward). Can you connect a battery charger to the under bonnet connection point and recharge the battery in just the same way as it is used to jump start the van? Or do I have to connect it direct to the battery

Ford says it is recommended that the batteries should always be removed from the vehicle for charging because the condition of them would be unknown and they could potentially burst if the electrolyte fluid is below plate level.
