Small vans often lead hard lives so finding a tidy one to convert into a micro camper can be difficult, especially if you're on a budget. The Volkswagen Caddy is a popular choice, although it does attract a bit of a premium – an ex-British Gas model (easily identified by its bright blue paint) could be a good choice, particularly as there's a huge support network for them.
