More spec and teaser images revealed for new Volkswagen Transporter

New teaser pictures have been released highlighting some of the interior details and features of the next generation Volkswagen T7 Transporter.

The latest version of the VW Transporter will make its debut at the Hannover Commercial Vehicle Show in September before arriving in showrooms early next year.

Expected to be based on the same platform as the latest Ford Transit Custom, the new VW T7 Transporter will offer a much wider range of options and trims, along with a choice of two different lengths and heights and a ‘Kombi’ passenger-carrying variant.

A double cab and a dropside are also expected, as well as a luxury passenger-carrying VW Caravelle.

The cabin is expected to have far more tech inside than the current model, with a new 12-inch driver display and 13-inch touchscreen for the standard infotainment system, including DAB+ and wireless App Connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

As standard, the new VW Transporter will have two individual seats at the front with a three-seater option. It will have a smartphone tray with induction charging and up to seven USB-C, USB-A and 12-volt interfaces.

In addition, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers the new VW Transporter with an optional 230V power take-off on both electric and diesel models.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the new VW Transporter T7 will also offer a longer and wider load area than its predecessor, delivering from 5.8 to 9.0 cubic metres of loadspace and a maximum payload of 1.33 tonnes. Its towing capacity will be rated at 2.88 tonnes.

Overall length will be 5,050mm, almost 150mm longer than the T6, while the wheelbase has been extended by 9.70mm to 3100mm. Long wheelbase models will offer a 3,500mm length between axles, making it 5450mm long in total.

The width of the new VW Transporter T7 will be 2032mm – a 128mm increase – with the gap between rear wheelarches increased to 1392mm, making access for Euro pallets far less snug than before. The load compartment length is 2602mm rising to 3002mm on the LWB model.

In standard roof format, Volkswagen says the new van will be “garageable”, meaning an overall height of below 2000mm with a turning circle of 11.8 metres.

Diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric VW eTransporter versions will be available. The diesel will be available with three outputs: 110hp, 150hp and 170hp and the plug in hybrid will add an electric motor, boosting power to 233hp.

Four fully electric versions of the VW T7 eTransporter will be launched with 116hp, 136hp, 218hp and 286hp. The base version comes with a 54kWh battery, rising to 83kWh for the other models. Range figures will be announced closer to launch.
