Volkswagen T5 California (2010–2015)

Model History

January 2010

Revised Volkswagen California launched

New features carried over from Volkswagen’s latest passenger cars include comfort and safety items such as three-spoke steering wheels, stylish new instruments, a recommended gear shift display, a USB interface to connect external devices, and the latest audio and integrated, touchscreen, hard-drive navigation systems.

Refinement is also improved thanks to a new range of four quieter, more economical 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail TDI engines. These offer power outputs of 84PS, 102PS, 140PS and 180PS. The new models also benefit from the introduction of Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, which will also be available later in 2010 with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with fourth generation Haldex coupling for the first time.

July 2010

National fixed-price servicing introduced

Volkswagen Van Centres have introduced great value, national fixed-price servicing, offering a full service for £292.58 (including VAT) for a seven-seater Volkswagen Caravelle MPV, Volkswagen California or any current Transporter-based campervan whether it is serviced in Surrey or Scotland.

October 2011

Entry-level California Beach goes on sale

The California Beach blends the appeal of the California with the practicality and versatility of the Caravelle people carrier. Inside, seating for up to seven people is available with a two-, or three-, seat rear bench, and further optional individual chairs. The front seats swivel to face the rear and a portable table, neatly stored in the sliding side door, can create a sociable lounge area. In addition, two folding chairs are stored in the tailgate.

A large amount of luggage space is offered behind the rail-mounted seats and the Beach also offers sleeping accommodation for four. The bench-seat easily folds to convert to a two-berth bed across the width of the vehicle, while a manual pop-up roof gives access to a further double bed. Integrated pull-down blinds for the side and rear windows, plus pop-up covers for the front window, ensure privacy when required.

Priced from £34,970 RRP, the California Beach is powered either a 2.0 TDI 114PS BlueMotion Technology engine or the more powerful 140PS unit, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. With a premium of £1,165 over the BlueMotion Technology model, the 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS returns 36.7 mpg on the combined cycle with CO 2 emissions of 203 g/km.
