Ice cream van insurance is a specialist area and finding cheap cover will take some work and patience. Honest John Vans explains how to get the cheapest van insurance for your ice cream van.

What sort of cover is needed for an ice cream van?

Insuring an ice cream van will require some understanding of the vehicle’s value and the cost of its fixtures and fittings. You can carry over your no claims bonus from your car or van, but you’ll need to provide the insurer with an accurate, realistic valuation of the vehicle.

In addition to van insurance, you’ll also need some form of public liability cover that'll protect you in the event of someone making a compensation claim against you or your business. And if you employ staff (even on a short-term casual basis), you’ll need some type of employers’ liability insurance too.

How can I get the best ice cream van insurance?

Ice cream van drivers work long hours and sometimes cover large distances, as they look to maximise their profits in the summer months. As a result the cost and level of cover can vary, depending on how hard you plan to work and travel.

As with standard van insurance, you can choose fully comprehensive, third party fire and theft or third party only cover. But it is always wise to compare quotes because there may not be a huge price gap between fully comp and third party cover.

As a minimum, the van insurance should include the cost of the van and the replacement of the ice cream equipment within it. Be sure to mention any one-off items that may be particularly expensive to repair or replace, as these will needed to be listed on the policy.

You will also need to inform the policy provider about annual mileage. They may ask about average hours worked and which areas/pitches you will be working from. As with any form of insurance, it pays to be honest and upfront. Failure to do so may results in cancelled insurance or refusal to pay out in the event of an accident or total write-off.

Who will be driving?

This is an important question for small businesses that employ staff. After all, sooner or later, you will want to take a day off and let someone else work on your behalf. Some policies will allow you to add a named driver over the age of 25 at no extra cost. Or you could opt for more expensive cover and choose insurance with ‘any driver’ cover, which allows almost anyone within your businesses with a clean licence to drive your vehicle.

Are you a member of a trade body or association? You might be entitled to a discount...

Some insurance providers will provide discounts or preferential cover to customers who are a member of a trade association like the Ice Cream Alliance (ICA). You will also save money if your vehicle has enhanced security, like a tracker or steering wheel lock.

Boost your cover and profits with outdoor shows, events and festivals

Some ice cream van drivers will secure a profitable pitch at a local park or street and stick with it for the entire season. However, if you plan to expand your scope and cover shows and festivals, you will need to inform your insurer in advance about this and provide specific details about the events and their nature. Some van insurance policies will already include this, but it's always prudent to check as some insurers will have strict limitations.

Common van insurance mistakes

Spending an hour or two sorting out your van insurance might sound like torture after a long day at work, but it will could you money and weeks of stress if you have to make a claim.

Make a list of what you would need to replace if you ice cream van was written-off or stolen and check with the insurer that these items are covered with new for old replacement. If your ice cream equipment is antique or specialist, ask the insurer how they would plan to replace it in the event of a claim.

Always make a note of the compulsory (sometimes labelled as 'voluntary') insurance excess - this is the amount of money the insurer will automatically deduct from a claim.  And as with many things in life, the insurance deals with the cheapest cover tend to have the highest level of excess.

Will the policy include business takings and stock?

Successful ice cream vans will take large sums of money and/or payment processing equipment. How will your van insurance policy protect you, in the event of your van being broken into? Will it cover a day’s takings and replace your contactless card machine? What will the insurer’s stance be if your stock is damage or stolen?  These are all important questions that must be asked before you take out van insurance.

Examine the claims procedure

How your insurance company will act in the event of a claim is vital to the survival of your business. How long will the claims process take?  Will you get a loan vehicle while yours is fixed or replaced? Where is your nearest approved repair centre? Request an outline of the claims procedure and compare it with other insurance companies.

Volkswagen T5 Transporter (2003-2015)

Insurance Group 5E

The Volkswagen Transporter is among the best-selling vans in the UK, and with good reason, as even the previous generation T5 model is extremely refined and car-like to drive. Those big sales also mean it’s easy to pick up a second-hand example just about anywhere, which is great news, as the T5 starts in insurance group 5E. That gets you a short-wheelbase model with an 84PS 2.0-litre TDI engine, a standard or medium roof and basic, Trendline or Highline specifications.

Ford Transit (2006-2014)

Insurance Group 5E

The previous generation of Britain’s best-selling panel van starts in insurance group 5E, which covers a huge array of different variants. You can bag a 2.2-litre TDCi model with anything from 85PS to 145PS with a low, medium or high roof and the same three-way choice of wheelbases – all in group 5E. The Transit’s mammoth new sales mean you can pick up a used example anywhere, and it’s far from difficult to find one that’ll meet your requirements.

Vauxhall Vivaro (2001-2014)

Insurance Group 4E

Seeing as it's the sister van to the Renault Trafic, it’s no surprise that the Vauxhall Vivaro also starts in insurance group 4E. The Vauxhall has a much larger range of models available within that group, though, covering everything from short and long-wheelbase vans, standard and high roof variants, economy-themed Ecoflex models and, as with the Renault, both 90PS and 115PS versions of the 2.0-litre CDTi diesel engine, along with manual and automatic transmissions.
